N2 - summaryIt is well-known that suicide rates for both genders are highest in elderly subjects in almost all parts of the world. Since the absolute number and proportion of elderly people within the total population are projected to significantly increase worldwide it is also expected that the number of late-life suicides and their economic, social and personal burdens will further increase in the upcoming decades. In this short review we discuss the specific epidemiologic and clinical features, the risk factors and the possibilities of prevention of suicidal behaviour in later life.
